Westcare & Tuberculosis

During the 1940s and 1950s tuberculosis was a serious disease affecting many West Australians. Back then Westcare was known as the Tuberculosis Association in Perth, and was primarily involved in rehabilitating and monitoring Tuberculosis patients at its Wooroloo Colony.

Through improved research, early detection and treatment, the incidence of tuberculosis can be minimised.

For years TB has been controlled and treated by various antibiotics, but now, strains of TB resistant to all major anti-TB drugs have emerged.

Westcare's continuing mission is to maintain a concern for the control of Tuberculosis. Each year Westcare awards research grants to organisations that are working towards understanding tuberculosis and finding a cure.

There is an urgent need to help the worldwide fight against Tuberculosis as in the time it has taken you to read this letter 35 people have been infected with TB somewhere in the world.
