Policies and procedures are in place to help us to provide a high quality of employment assistance service in accordance with the disability employment standards of the Commonwealth Department of Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA).
We recognise the support of FaHCSIA which partly funds Westcare’s Employment Assistance Services.
Each employee is valued as an individual person and this is reflected by Westcare’s employment practices and promotional materials. Employees are capable of making personal decisions and able to contribute to business/service evaluation. Processes for informed participation, with or without support, may be at individual and service levels and may involve decision regarding personal daily matters and program planning.
A prospective employee (with advocate when needed) is encouraged to have a guided factory tour to discuss information about employment options and conditions. Following submission of an employment application, there are further opportunities for discussion during the interview.
Employees (with advocate when needed) are involved in their own employment management program planning. Their inputs/feedback regarding personal employment goals and outcomes are essential elements of high quality employment assistance services.
Competency development in areas such as options identification, informed choice/decision making and responsibility are incorporated into support relationship and by promoting socially valued roles. Personal development/training is supplemented through community resources such as assertiveness, advocacy and related TAFE courses.
Current information and circulars from management and consumer representatives are regularly posted on notice boards and available to all employees. Support personnel can be contacted for explanation/clarification.
Employees have rights and responsibilities and are encouraged to participate in electing and becoming committee representatives (e.g. Consumer Representatives and Occupational Safety and Health). Consumer Representatives Committee members are consumer elected for a two year term. New members will be shown how the committee works, and the roles and responsibilities of being an elected committee member representing employees will be explained/coached by experienced members.
The key role of an elected consumer representative is to discuss and address relevant issues or concerns with management and to give direct feedback to other employees (minutes of meetings posted on notice board and support is available for explanation/clarification). Consultation takes place within the specific committee, and when invited by committee members, support can be provided by personnel experienced in committee procedures and employee representation.
Westcare’s excellent quality of employment assistance services are based on the concept of Social Role Valorisation developed by Professor Wolf Wolfensberger. In practice, within the context of a sound and viable business, specific support services are designed to address individual needs, encourage personal decision-making and choice, promote community participation, and enhance competencies and valued social roles.
The long term aim is to bring about unity between businesses and support services.
